Tongariro Alpine Crossing
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is an 18km, 8 hour trek through volcanic plateau’s within New Zealand’s only dual World Heritage Area. Rated as one of the best one day walks in the world this awe inspiring walk takes in Mt Ngauruhoe (Mt Doom in Lord of the Rings), the Red Crater and the magnificent Emerald Lakes.

Return transport from Snowy Waters Lodge with Matai Shuttles departs 7am daily during summer $40 per person. Guides also available.

Bridge to Nowhere
A two day trek through the historic Mangapurua valley to the Bridge to Nowhere. Starts at Ruatiti (30 kms from Snowy Waters Lodge). Includes one night camping. River transport from the Mangapurua landing to Pipiriki is necessary.

Ohakune Old Coach Road
Walk through stands of kahikatea, rimu, matai and ponga while marvelling at the workmanship required to construct the Hapuawhenua viaduct. The road, originally a horse track was founded by railway surveyors in 1886.

Mt Ruapehu Crater Lake
Take a scenic chairlift ride from the carpark at Whakapapa to 2020m above sea level, followed by a five to seven hour walk to the famous Crater Lake. The views of the central North Island are breathtaking. Chairlift ride $23.

Waitonga Falls
A well formed track through mountain beech trees and kaikawaka (mountain cedar) forests. Tongariro National Parks highest waterfall; Waitonga towers 39 metres above the stream it disperses into.

For the more experienced walker, longer walks include the 3 day Tongariro Northern Circuit or the 4 – 6 day Round the Mountain Trek
